Houston’s two commercial airports are receiving more than $126 million in federal funding announced by the Federal Aviation Administration. The allocation supports infrastructure projects at George Bush Intercontinental Airport and William P. Hobby Airport through the fiscal year 2026 Airport Improvement Program grants.

More than $62.2 million will be used to rehabilitate Runway 13R-31L at William P. Hobby Airport. Construction on the Hobby Airport runway rehabilitation is expected to begin in spring 2027 and last approximately 24 months.

At George Bush Intercontinental Airport, grants will fund improvements to the Skyway automated people mover. The funding also covers airfield drainage upgrades and HVAC efficiency improvements in Terminal D.

More than $126 million in federal funding is a significant investment in the future of Houston’s airports and the millions of passengers we serve, Houston Airports Director of Aviation Jim Szczesniak said in a statement.

The Houston funding is part of a broader $1.776 billion nationwide FAA investment announced July 2. U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy announced the nationwide FAA investment, which will support airport projects in 46 states.

The Federal Aviation Administration allocated more than $126 million to Houston’s airports as part of a national effort to upgrade aviation infrastructure. Hobby Airport and terminal efficiency upgrades at George Bush Intercontinental Airport, addressing maintenance needs for facilities that serve millions of passengers annually.

These grants are a component of the $1.776 billion distributed across 46 states in July 2026. The FAA stated that the investments aim to modernize airport systems while maintaining safety standards for future travel demand. The Airport Improvement Program, updated by the FAA Modernization and Reform Act of 2012, guides the distribution of these federal resources based on established eligibility criteria.
