UK — Lloyds Banking Group will discontinue opening new accounts under the Halifax brand. The company also plans to rebrand existing Halifax accounts to Lloyds, converting them to Lloyds customer accounts.
The transition will involve removing Halifax signs from 190 of its 531 branches starting in early 2027. Despite these changes, no branches are slated for closure as a result of the brand alteration. From next year, Lloyds will operate as the group's sole brand in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland.
Sort codes and account numbers will remain unaffected by the brand migration plan. Bank of Scotland will continue to be retained for customers located in Scotland. Lloyds Banking Group has utilized the Lloyds, Halifax, and Bank of Scotland brands since January 2009.
Jas Singh, a consumer relations boss, stated that Halifax customers would retain current features such as the app design and branch staff. Singh also noted that sort codes and account numbers would be maintained. "As Halifax changes to Lloyds, our Halifax customers will keep everything they know and love today – the same fantastic app design, the same friendly faces in our branches – even the same sort code and account number. But as Lloyds customers, they'll get the best innovation and experiences we offer," Singh said.
He added that the company is anticipating Halifax customers accessing offerings already available to Lloyds customers. "Our Lloyds customers are already benefiting from a significant investment into propositions like Club Lloyds, Lloyds Premier, Lloyds Ultra and Lloyds Rewards – and now we're really excited that Halifax customers can bank on Lloyds for more," he said.
Halifax was founded as the Halifax Permanent Benefit Building Society in the mid-1800s. This initiative represents a consolidation of brands for Lloyds Banking Group, streamlining its presence in major parts of the United Kingdom under a single identity. The move impacts a portion of its branch network and customer base, particularly those associated with the Halifax brand, which has operated alongside Lloyds since 2009. The retention of the Bank of Scotland brand in Scotland indicates a regionally differentiated strategy.
