REINO UNIDO — The British government announced on June 30, 2026, that it intends to challenge Paramount Skydance's proposed US$110 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery. British Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy stated in a communiqué that she was "considering intervening" in Paramount's intent to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery assets, including CNN, HBO, and the Warner Bros. film studio.
Nandy indicated she was considering intervention for public interest reasons, specifically to ensure a sufficient plurality of opinions in the media and a sufficient plurality of individuals controlling media companies. She has not yet made a final decision regarding the intervention.
The companies involved have one week to respond to the letter from the British Department for Culture. If the intervention proceeds, Ofcom, the British media regulator, would assess the agreement. The UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) already has an ongoing investigation into the deal.
Paramount expects the agreement to take effect in the third quarter of 2026. The U.S. Department of Justice approved the deal in early June 2026 without requiring any concessions.
