CHICAGO — Seiya Suzuki hit a walk-off single in the ninth inning, giving the Chicago Cubs a 3-2 victory over the San Diego Padres on June 29, 2026, at Wrigley Field. The win marked the Cubs' 10th walk-off victory of the season.

Suzuki's game-winning hit came off an 88 mph breaking ball thrown by Padres pitcher Mason Miller. The Padres' loss was their third consecutive defeat, and the fourth such streak for the team this season. The San Diego Padres recorded a six-game losing streak from May 30 to June 5.

In the ninth inning, the Padres made a defensive change with Jase Bowen replacing Samad Taylor in left field. Earlier in the inning, Michael Busch hit a shallow fly ball to left field with the bases loaded and no outs. Dansby Swanson was tagged out at home plate by catcher Freddy Fermin during the inning.

Padres pitcher Craig Stammen commented on the game's outcome. "Unfortunately the wind was blowing out and probably blew that ball a few feet," Stammen said. He also noted that the team had chances to score, stating, "We had opportunities to score more than one run in those spots with two-outs and we just weren't able to get it done tonight."

San Diego hitters collectively went 3-for-13 with runners in scoring position. In the end, we end up losing a close ballgame, Stammen said.

For the Cubs, Shota Imanaga started on the mound, while Griffin Canning made his ninth start of the season for the Padres. Canning pitched 4.1 innings, allowing two runs on five hits and striking out three batters. Stammen assessed Canning's performance, saying, "I saw a lot of off-speed stuff for strikes, and [he] mixed in his fastball." He added, "He kept executing pitches."

The Padres scored their runs in the third and fourth innings against Imanaga. In the eighth inning, with the bases loaded and two outs, Freddy Fermin popped up to Nico Hoerner while Caleb Thielbar was pitching for the Cubs.
