BUDAPEST — Hungarian Police announced the arrest of a 30-year-old man from Budapest on Tuesday. Hungary's National Bureau of Investigation confirmed the man was placed under arrest on June 17, and he is currently being held on suspicion of the illegal use of human bodies.

The suspect works as an orderly at a Budapest hospital. Police stated the suspect allegedly stole remains found through his job at the hospital and also allegedly dug up bodies in abandoned cemeteries in Slovakia and Hungary. The investigation began after the Life Protection Department of the police received information that the orderly was storing human remains at work and at home.

Authorities searched all properties connected to the suspect, including cars. During these searches, they found a prepared human face, facial skin, bones stored in a suitcase, a complete lower leg, a brain, a hand, several skulls, and a heart in a jar. It was not immediately clear if the heart belonged to a human or an animal, and forensic specialists are analyzing the remains to establish their origin.

The man confessed to the illicit use of human remains. He admitted that he was "particularly attracted to human body parts, from which he had prepared food for himself in various ways and had eaten them." The hospital orderly told police he was "passionate about anatomy and pathology, and likes to dissect animals." Law enforcement confiscated the suspect's electronic devices, including a computer, laptops, tablets, mobile phones, SIMs, and data cards. Hungarian police indicated that additional charges may be filed against the Budapest man if the remains are confirmed to be of human origin.
