LORTON — A fire destroyed a storage facility at the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Urban Search and Rescue Training Facility on Furnace Road in Lorton, Virginia, on Saturday, June 27, 2026. The blaze occurred around 5 p.m. and resulted in more than $1 million in damage to equipment, including a semi tractor-trailer and a Kubota tractor. No injuries were reported.

Surveillance video captured six individuals walking around the facility prior to the fire. Officials stated it is unknown how these individuals entered the facility. William Vannoy, deputy chief of Fairfax County Fire and Rescue, said, "We're not characterizing it as arson, we can't assign intent to this yet." Fairfax County officials are asking the public to provide information about the fire or the individuals seen in the surveillance video by calling Crime Solvers at 866-411-8477 or visiting the Fairfax Crime Solvers website.

Battalion Chief Robert Schoenberger said, "This is a heavy heartbreak for me." He added, "I'm hoping that we can figure out what happened here and be able to replace what we have because this is what's the bread and butter of Fairfax County Urban Search and Rescue." Schoenberger noted that the members who train at the facility dedicate their time for free. The training facility is utilized by Virginia Task Force 1, which comprises 79 first responders from Fairfax County. Virginia Task Force 1 consists of special operations volunteers who assist in disaster search and rescue efforts. The team is currently in Venezuela providing assistance following earthquakes that struck the country on June 24.
