ESPN NBA Analyst Tim Legler addressed criticism regarding the broadcast crew's coverage of De'Aaron Fox's decision in the closing seconds of Game 4 of the Knicks-Spurs series. Legler spoke in a podcast interview about the real-time analysis decisions made during the game.

Fox attempted a breakaway layup instead of trying to draw a foul, and OG Anunoby blocked the shot. The New York Knicks won the game against the San Antonio Spurs. Legler stated the broadcast crew did not extensively examine Fox's decision in real time because the Knicks were immediately transitioning to the other end of the court. "You got a chance potentially to be calling a game-winning shot right there going the other direction," Legler said.

Legler noted that the broadcast team had to provide an explanation for a foul called on Jose Alvarado at half court. "The play continued on, and then there was a very bizarre call that we had to reference," he said. He explained the need to clarify the situation, stating, "We had to basically work through that — wasn't a backcourt, here's why — let's show the replay, explain it, because people are freaking out." The broadcast showed the sequence involving Alvarado again after returning from commercial to address the backcourt question.

Legler expressed a minor wish that a quick comment could have been made about Fox's decision. "I wish maybe one of us could have got a quick comment in," he said. Despite this, Legler stated that the broadcast crew did not regret their coverage the following day. He said they were not saying, "Oh, damn," and beating themselves up because of what was still happening in the moment.

Fox told the broadcast team he could count on one hand the number of times he had been tracked down with a one-step lead in the open court during his career. Charles Barkley commented on a postgame show that Fox should have taken the foul.
