SUWON — South Korea's Samsung Group and SK Group are set to announce up to 2,000 trillion won ($1.3 trillion) in investments over the next decade. Leaders from both groups are expected to present their investment plans at the presidential office on June 30, 2026.

This investment announcement is part of President Lee Jae Myung's 'Three Mega Projects for the Great Leap Forward' industrial strategy. President Lee is scheduled to introduce this initiative at a 2 p.m. event on June 30, 2026.

Samsung Electronics Co. is expected to build between four and five semiconductor fabrication plants in the Gwangju area and construct chip packaging plants in South Chungcheong province. SK Hynix Inc. is also expected to build four to five semiconductor fabrication plants in the Gwangju area and expand its NAND plants in North Chungcheong province.

Presidential spokesperson Kang Yu-jung stated that officials from the industry, science, climate, and land ministries will outline government policy measures before Samsung and SK present their investment proposals. Presidential policy chief Kim Yong-beom said in a YouTube interview on June 27, 2026, that "very unusual" figures would be unveiled. One report indicated that Samsung alone was expected to announce more than 1,000 trillion won ($646 billion) in spending.

Why It Matters

The planned investments by Samsung Group and SK Group, totaling up to 2,000 trillion won ($1.3 trillion) over the next decade, are associated with South Korea's economic planning. These investments are central to President Lee Jae Myung's 'Three Mega Projects for the Great Leap Forward' industrial strategy. The allocation of funds towards new semiconductor fabrication plants by both Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix in areas like Gwangju, along with specialized facilities in other provinces, indicates a focus on expanding South Korea's capacity in the global semiconductor industry.
