NEW YORK — CBS News has hired British journalists Trevor Phillips and Josh Boswell. Phillips joined as a senior global affairs correspondent, and Boswell was hired from the Daily Mail as an investigative reporter. Bari Weiss is the editor-in-chief of CBS News and has served in the role for eight months.

Andrew Neil, former editor of the Sunday Times, said: "She's been looking at various Brits that might add a bit of opinion/attitude diversity to US media, instead of the dominant, predictable Columbia Journalism School uniformity. Not a bad idea." A CBS News source said regarding the hires: "They do the kind of things that Bari is looking for; it's not puff pieces and kid gloves."

Phillips is a British broadcaster who previously anchored the flagship political show for Sky News. Bari Weiss said of Phillips: "His career had been a masterclass in seeing beyond groupthink." Phillips was previously suspended from the Labour party over alleged Islamophobia after commenting that UK Muslims were "a nation within a nation." He was later readmitted to the party.

Weiss met with Justin Webb, a presenter on a BBC radio program. They did not discuss a specific position at CBS News during their meeting. A complaint against Webb was partially upheld in 2024 after he used the phrase "trans women, in other words males" when discussing a story. The BBC's complaints unit concluded that his comment gave the impression of endorsing one viewpoint in a highly controversial area.

A CBS News staffer said: "If her goal is to push CBS News to the right, including in global coverage, then these steps make sense, because in no other universe would they." A CBS News spokesperson declined to comment on Weiss's interest in British journalists.

Weiss founded the Free Press after resigning from the New York Times six years prior to the report. Her Free Press deputy editor, Oliver Wiseman, is British and previously worked for the Spectator. Weiss held a party at the Groucho Club in London last summer.
