Assa Abloy laid off the majority of Level Home's staff, effective June 26, 2026. This action follows Assa Abloy's acquisition of the smart lock company in 2024.
Level Home CEO John Martin and CTO Ken Goto are departing the company on the same date, along with most of Level Home's engineering team. Peter Boriskin, CTO for Assa Abloy North America, and Kimberly Cummins, head of North American HR for Assa Abloy, informed staff that their positions had been eliminated immediately.
"It continues to operate as a business within ASSA ABLOY, and we will continue to develop and sell the Level Lock platform and hardware," said Rebecca Samuel, Director of Communications and Branding, America, for Assa Abloy. She added, "We remain fully committed to providing the highest levels of support and continuing our investments in the smart lock category."
A small number of core Level Home employees are being retained to complete an upcoming product launch focused on multi-family lock management. Level Home has hundreds of thousands of active users. Assa Abloy's most recent financial report shows declining sales in its North America residential segment. Level is not part of Kwikset, and the brands remain separate. An anonymous former Level Home employee stated, "Assa Abloy is not equipped to preserve the customer base."
Why It Matters
The restructuring at Level Home by parent company Assa Abloy represents a change for the smart lock manufacturer and its user base. The departure of key leadership and a majority of the engineering team impacts the operational structure of Level Home, which was acquired by Assa Abloy in 2024. Despite these changes, Assa Abloy affirmed its commitment to the Level Lock platform and hardware, aiming to continue development and sales.
The events occur as Assa Abloy's North America residential segment has experienced declining sales, according to its latest financial report. The statement from a former Level Home employee suggests concerns about Assa Abloy's ability to maintain the existing customer base, which includes hundreds of thousands of active users. The retention of a small team for a multi-family product launch indicates a continued focus on specific market segments for the Level brand.
