BRONX, NEW YORK — Derek Jeter and Joe Girardi surprised George Steinbrenner in his Yankee Stadium suite on April 13, 2010, to present him with his World Series ring during the home opener. The visit occurred before a crowd of 49,293 spectators.

During the surprise visit, Jeter noticed that Steinbrenner was wearing both his 2000 Yankees World Series ring and an Ohio State ring. "Boss, take off that Ohio State ring," Jeter said. "Michigan," Steinbrenner responded. Jeter removed his 2000 Yankees World Series ring and replaced it with the 2009 ring.

In the bottom of the third inning, Steinbrenner wore sunglasses in his suite as "My Way" played over the public address system. Jeter hit a home run over the right-center wall on the first pitch he saw in that same inning.

"None of us would be here, the stadium wouldn't be here, if it wasn't for him. He'll always be The Boss," he said.

Steinbrenner died on July 13, 2010, of a heart attack at his home in Tampa. He had turned 80 years old just nine days before his death.

Steinbrenner appointed Thurman Munson as captain of the New York Yankees 45 years after Lou Gehrig's death. Jeter was serving as captain of the New York Yankees at the start of the 2010 season.
