DETROIT — The New York Yankees placed third baseman Ryan McMahon on the 10-day injured list on Wednesday, June 25, 2025. McMahon was diagnosed with a peritonsillar abscess and had it drained early that morning.
Doctors recommended McMahon avoid physical activity for at least 72 hours following the drainage procedure. The Yankees backdated his injured list stint to Monday, June 23, 2025, making him eligible for activation on Thursday, June 26, 2025.
McMahon described the condition as painful. "It's just really painful, giving me migraines," he said. He added that he experienced difficulty eating and opening his jaw. "I wasn't able to eat, couldn't really open my jaw much," McMahon said.
McMahon reported feeling sick since Monday, June 16, 2025. Following the procedure, he noted an improvement in his condition. "I actually feel so much better right now than I did the last 3-4 days," McMahon said. He also clarified that he was not contagious. McMahon indicated that recovery would proceed after the initial 72-hour period. "But apparently there's a lot more risks involved now that there's an open wound in there. After these 72 hours, I should be able to do everything," he said.
In a corresponding move, the Yankees recalled Oswaldo Cabrera from Triple-A Scranton. Cabrera fractured his left ankle and sustained ligament damage in May 2024. Prior to his recall, he batted .397 with a .967 OPS in 18 games for Triple-A Scranton in June 2025. He also batted .385 with a .965 OPS in 64 plate appearances from the right side of the plate.
José Caballero started at third base for the Yankees on June 25, 2025. He remained in the game after receiving attention from a trainer and manager Aaron Boone.
