Houston recorded more power outages than any other city in the United States in May 2026, according to data from Whisker Labs. Outages increased sharply in the city during that month.

Bob Marshall, CEO of Whisker Labs, stated that Houston's outage frequency in April 2026 was the second highest nationally, behind Western Pennsylvania. "Outages were up sharply in Houston in May after moderating for a few months," Marshall said. "Houston was 2.8 times the national average, with some communities being 9 times the national average." Residents in Fulshear experienced an average of more than six power outages in May 2026. Kingwood, Crosby, and parts of Spring also had increased power outage activity during that month.

Nathan Brownell, vice president of CenterPoint Energy, said the company does not analyze data on a month-to-month basis. "We tend not to look at it month per month, we look at it holistically across the period of time and making sure we’re trending overall," Brownell said. "We were very pleased with our reliability performance last year, but for us, this is just a snapshot of the journey we’re going to be on long term."

CenterPoint Energy reported fewer outages in 2025 compared to 2024, with customers experiencing approximately 30 fewer minutes of outage time on average. The company's Power Outage Index was 0.49 in December 2025, compared to the national average of 0.32 for the same period. The Greater Houston area experienced four storm days in April 2026 and five storm days in May 2026. This contrasts with one storm day in April 2025 and one in May 2025.

CenterPoint Energy installed more than 69,000 storm-resilient poles as part of its Greater Houston Resiliency Initiative. The company also trimmed and cleared nearly 11,500 miles of higher-risk vegetation and undergrounded over 600 miles of power lines. Additionally, CenterPoint Energy installed more than 650 automation and intelligent grid switching devices. The company stated these actions prevented over 100 million customer outage minutes in less than two years.
