Michigan State Senator Mallory McMorrow, a Democratic candidate in the Michigan Senate primary, released a political advertisement accusing President Donald Trump of blocking the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge. The ad was part of an advertising purchase of over $40,000 for TV and digital platforms in the Detroit market.
The Gordie Howe International Bridge spans the Detroit River, connecting Detroit, Michigan, and Windsor, Ontario. Officials had scheduled a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the bridge on June 12, but it was postponed due to outstanding issues between the U.S. and Canada. Canada financed the construction of the bridge, a project which cost close to $4.4 billion. Construction on the bridge has been underway since 2018.
In her political advertisement, McMorrow stated, "I'm Mallory McMorrow and I have one message for the president: open this damn bridge." Campaigns are allowed up to two expletives in advertisements per Federal Communications Commission (FCC) rules. McMorrow is running against U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens and Abdul El-Sayed in the primary.
A super PAC supporting McMorrow, Yes Michigan Action Committee, has reserved nearly $6 million in advertising. Federal campaign finance records show that Matthew Moroun donated $1 million to Donald Trump's super PAC earlier this year. The Moroun family owns the Ambassador Bridge, which also connects Detroit and Windsor. Regarding the race, McMorrow said, "Right now in this primary, my two opponents are trying to present a false binary choice." She added, "There are so many people who are just starting to tune into this race."
