FOXBOROUGH — England and Ghana played to a 0-0 draw in a Group L World Cup match on Tuesday at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts. England maintained 79 percent of possession but did not score.

England attempted 19 shots on goal, with three on target. In the 87th minute, Nico O'Reilly hit the crossbar with a header, and Harry Kane shot the subsequent rebound over the goal. England coach Thomas Tuchel said, "It's a long tournament and I think the boys tried everything. They played with the right energy." He added, "We always try to entertain our fans. It was difficult today but I hope the fans don't lose belief."

Prince Adu was challenged from behind by Ezri Konsa in the 78th minute before he could shoot. The referee did not award a penalty for the challenge and did not consult the VAR monitor. Ghana coach Carlos Queiroz said, "The VAR went for a coffee which is natural but it is a clear penalty and a red card." He also said, "It was a clear penalty, if not a red card. We have no doubts about that." Queiroz noted, "Our plan was to block and frustrate them from the first minute. We did it."

England midfielder Jude Bellingham said, "Frustrated a little bit with how they defended, how they set up. They got exactly out of the game what they played for. Couldn't quite break them down, even with all corners, all the possession, all the shots on goal from distance."

Queiroz said, "Football is not only about possession. It is also about having the right attitude." He added, "We celebrated because we got a draw against a team who are one of the favourites to win the World Cup."

Tuchel commented on Kane's missed opportunity, saying, "It fell to him and 99 times out of 100 he takes that chance. If he converts his chance maybe we are talking now about the patience and discipline and performance." He noted, "But now it is 0-0 and maybe the headlines are a little different. We had enough set-pieces to decide the match but we were not clinical enough."

England has accumulated four points from two Group L matches after defeating Croatia 4-2 in their opening game. Ghana also has four points from two Group L matches, having defeated Panama 1-0 in their first match. England will play Panama on Saturday at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
