ST. JOHNS COUNTY — The Florida Department of Transportation held a public input meeting on Tuesday at the Players Community Senior Center in St. Johns County. The meeting presented proposed safety improvements for the A1A corridor, specifically the stretch from Gnarled Oaks Drive to the Duval County line.

The Florida Department of Transportation proposed several re-routing changes for traffic movements. These included re-routing eastbound and westbound through and left-turn movements at the Fairfield Boulevard and Sawgrass Drive West intersection. The department also proposed re-routing eastbound and westbound through movements at the TPC Boulevard and Country Club Boulevard intersection, as well as offsetting northbound and southbound left turns at that same intersection.

Further proposed changes involved re-routing eastbound and westbound through movements at the Sawgrass Village Drive and L'Atrium Drive intersection. The department also suggested re-routing northbound left-turn and westbound through movements at Solana Road. Additionally, the Florida Department of Transportation proposed extending the southbound auxiliary lane from Merchants Plaza to Professional Drive to improve merging from J.T. Butler Boulevard. Another proposal included extending the eastbound right-turn lane at Ponte Vedra Lakes Boulevard.

Jeannie Sanchez, a resident, expressed concerns regarding the proposals. "This is probably good for Morgan and Morgan and Farah and Farah. They're going to have more accidents there," Sanchez said. She added, "We live in the community, and I feel like what they're doing is going to cause more chaos. Too many people have died, and they're not going to solve the issue."
