TACLOBAN — Three students were killed and seven were wounded in a shooting at San Jose National High School in Tacloban on Monday. Two students, aged 14 and 15, opened fire at the government-run school at approximately 9 a.m.

Both suspects, who were students at the school along with the victims, were arrested. One suspect was taken into custody at the school shortly after the incident. The second suspect fled to a nearby house before surrendering to police after residents alerted authorities.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ordered a thorough investigation of the shooting and directed law enforcement to increase security in schools, workplaces, and public areas. The Department of Education condemned the violence and extended condolences to the victims' families. Police transported the wounded to nearby medical facilities and deployed additional personnel at the school. The national police urged the public to remain calm and cooperate with authorities.

Regional police chief Brig. Gen. Jason Capoy said the suspects claimed in initial questioning that they had been bullied at school and had no criminal records. Capoy said most of the dead and wounded were female students. "The suspects barged into two rooms because after the shooting in the first, the children scampered and the suspects apparently ran after some victims into another room," Capoy said. Police found over 40 empty shells at the scene.

Videos posted online showed students hiding under desks in a classroom and others leaving the campus. Capoy said only one guard was on duty for multiple entrances and exits at the school, which has more than 1,500 students. National police spokesman Allen Rae Co said a 9 mm pistol used in the shooting was registered to a policewoman in the region who was taken into custody. Co said the other weapon used was a .38 caliber revolver registered to a security agency in Cebu City.
