CALGARY — A collision occurred on Centre Street North between 19 Avenue and 21 Avenue NE in Calgary on Saturday, June 20, 2026, at approximately 1:35 p.m. Calgary police said a driver believed to be experiencing a medical emergency caused a chain reaction that killed a cyclist and injured a pedestrian.

A man in his 70s was driving a 2019 Ford Escape north on Centre Street between 19 and 21 avenues. Investigators say the driver is believed to have suffered a medical event. The Ford Escape drifted onto the curb and struck a cyclist who was heading north in the same lane. A woman in her 60s was in the vehicle with the driver.

The driver continued onto a sidewalk, striking a bus stop sign and dragging the cyclist. The vehicle then entered back onto the roadway near 20 Avenue. The cyclist was declared dead on the scene. The Ford Escape steered into the 21 Avenue intersection, striking the passenger side of an occupied Toyota Highlander, which then struck a Chevrolet Silverado.

The Ford Escape hit a man in his 60s, a pedestrian, before blowing past another stop sign and striking a pole. The driver of the Ford Escape was rushed to a hospital in critical condition. The pedestrian suffered minor injuries. All other people involved reported either minor or no injuries.
