CHICAGO — Seven people were killed and at least 38 individuals were injured in multiple shooting incidents across Chicago from Friday evening to Sunday morning, according to police. Preliminary information from Chicago police indicated at least two dozen shooting incidents occurred since 5 p.m. on Friday.
One of the incidents involved at least 12 people suffering gunshot wounds on a Chicago street Friday evening. Police reported that two individuals in an SUV opened fire. The shooting occurred just after 11 p.m. in the Princeton Park neighborhood on Juneteenth. Two gunmen in a red SUV reportedly opened fire on a crowd celebrating Juneteenth on the South Side before leaving the scene. The suspects in this mass shooting remained at large on Sunday morning.
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson posted on X on Saturday: "What should have been a night of celebration and community reflection for Juneteenth was shattered by a horrific act of violence." He added: "My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their loved ones." Johnson also stated: "Violence has no place in our city, and those responsible will be held accountable." The 12 victims from the Friday evening shooting included eight men and four women, ranging in age from 17 to 47, and were treated at four different hospitals. A man sustained unknown injuries but refused medical treatment.
Specific victims in the Friday evening shooting included a 32-year-old woman shot twice in the back, who was hospitalized in stable condition, and a 44-year-old man grazed by four bullets in the back, also hospitalized in stable condition. A 17-year-old boy and a 22-year-old woman were each shot in the thigh, and a 32-year-old man was shot in the head. Additionally, a 26-year-old man was struck in the body and hospitalized in critical condition. Separate fatal shootings included a 21-year-old killed on Sunday, an 18-year-old killed Saturday evening, and a 50-year-old killed on Friday.
Further incidents included a 29-year-old man killed and an elderly bystander wounded in a drive-by shooting in the West Pullman area on Friday. Three men, ages 33, 34, and 50, were killed in separate shootings across Chicago on Friday night. A 37-year-old man was fatally shot in the neck in Chicago's Bridgeport neighborhood early Saturday. At least 10 other people were wounded in shootings citywide from Friday night to Saturday night.
Chicago Police Department data indicated a slight uptick in shooting incidents compared to the first half of last year. Murders in Chicago are up 8 percent so far this year compared to 2025, according to Chicago Police Department crime stats. However, homicides in Chicago are down by 35 percent compared to four years ago, and violent crime rates in Chicago have generally dropped over the past few years, in parallel with national trends.
President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social on Sunday morning, stating, "Why isn't Governor Pritzker calling me for help. I could make Chicago a safe City in ONE MONTH, in ONE YEAR, it would be one of the safest!!!"
