San Antonio District 4 Councilman Edward Mungia announced the installation of new stop signs, a crosswalk, and warning signs at the intersection of Brook Valley Drive and Lark Valley Drive in mid-June 2026. The improvements followed concerns raised by Ricki Trevino, a blind homeowner on Brook Valley Drive.
Trevino had initially raised concerns about speeding drivers creating a safety risk for her and her children. She first reported issues with the intersection in 2025 through a 311 report and other attempts to contact the city. Trevino also contacted KSAT in January to report fast-moving traffic and limited warnings for drivers and pedestrians in the area.
Mungia stated that the intersection in June differed from its condition in January. "Thankfully, a lot has changed," Mungia said. He noted the new installations, saying, "The primary thing that we are seeing here today is a new installation of this crosswalk, stop bar on both sides, and beautiful stop signs that you see here." As of mid-June, the intersection includes an all-way stop sign. He also stated, "And as you can see, people are mostly accommodated now."
Mungia estimated the work and materials cost roughly $16,000 to $20,000. "So that's pretty average I would say for something like this, but certainly worthwhile," Mungia said. Trevino indicated that the improvements have increased her sense of security, stating, "Very happy and proud of the city that actually is doing these changes for us." Trevino also expressed appreciation for being heard, noting, "I really do appreciate it because a lot of us, and a lot of my community, they're afraid to speak up because they don't think that we're going to be heard."
Councilman Mungia credited collaboration with Public Works and KSAT for the changes. "I'm just glad that KSAT was there and our office was there to help out and make sure we get some stuff done for you and the neighborhood, too," Mungia said. He added, "I mean, this benefits everybody, really." Mungia said he plans to pursue additional safety measures for the intersection. These measures could include flashing lights at the stop sign and a crosswalk that illuminates when activated by a push button.
No independent assessment of Edward Mungia’s claims was available.
