CHICAGO — At least 12 people sustained gunshot wounds after two individuals in an SUV opened fire into a crowd in the Princeton Park neighborhood on the South Side of Chicago late Friday. Police received a call regarding a person shot at approximately 11 p.m.
A preliminary investigation indicated that a red SUV drove alongside a large crowd in the 200 block of West 95th Street near South Wentworth Avenue. Two suspects inside the vehicle began firing into the crowd before the SUV fled the scene. The victims included eight men and four women, with ages ranging from 17 to 47. All victims were treated at four area hospitals.
Two males remained in critical condition following the shooting. A 17-year-old boy suffered a gunshot wound to the thigh, and a 26-year-old man sustained gunshot injuries to his body; both were hospitalized in critical condition. Other victims included a 32-year-old woman shot twice in the back, a 44-year-old man who sustained four graze wounds to his back, a 22-year-old woman shot in the thigh, a 30-year-old man with gunshot wounds to the body, a 32-year-old man shot in the back, another 32-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the head, a 36-year-old woman with gunshot wounds to the body, a 38-year-old woman with graze wounds, and a 47-year-old man shot in the knee. These individuals were listed in good condition. An additional man of unknown age sustained gunshot wounds to the body and was hospitalized in good condition. Another man sustained unknown injuries but refused medical treatment.
Area Two detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting. The incident occurred on Juneteenth, a holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the U.S. In total, at least 21 people were shot in Chicago since Friday evening, resulting in four fatalities, according to police reports.
