Paris authorities have expanded safety protocols for the upcoming Fête de la Musique, which officials anticipate will draw more than 2 million attendees on Sunday. City officials implemented a zero-tolerance policy regarding sexual violence following incidents at the previous year's event.
The festival originated in Paris in 1982 and has taken place annually in France for more than 40 years. It is celebrated internationally on June 21 as World Music Day. Approximately 2 million people attended the event in the city last year.
Officials will operate cordoned-off safe zones for women and disabled residents near city hall and Bastille during the event. Specialist support teams will staff these safe zones to process sexual violence complaints. Several attendees at last year's festival reported being pricked with syringes.
"Last year there was an impact on the public space, there were excesses, incidents, lots of sexual violence. We had a large clean-up issue afterwards so this year we wanted to mobilise ahead of time to secure the event," said Lamia El Aaraje, Paris deputy mayor.
Municipal workers installed thousands of additional waste and recycling containers across the city for the weekend. Sanitation workers required two weeks to remove all debris from the streets after last year's festival. Officials directed attendees to utilize the 600 public restrooms operating 24 hours daily. Approximately 1,400 drinking water fountains will be active to address forecast high temperatures.
City hall issued public warnings to international visitors regarding hazards at local canals and waterways. Two individuals died in the Seine river last month following celebrations of a Paris Saint-Germain soccer victory over Arsenal. One death resulted from cardiac arrest after entering the water, while authorities recovered a second body later.
"The DNA of Fête de la Musique is kindness and lots of people. It's a party that is responsible, joyous, happy and cosmopolitan. That's all we want in Paris," said Pierre Rabadan, Paris tourism and nightlife official.
