LOS ANGELES — The Recording Academy will add five new categories to the Grammy Awards for the 2027 ceremony and implement several rule changes. The 69th Grammy Awards ceremony is scheduled for February 7, 2027, at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.
The five new categories introduced are Best Asian Pop Music Performance, Best R&B Collaboration or Duo/Group Performance, Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance, Best Traditional Folk Album, and Best Latin Song. The new Best Asian Pop Music Performance category will recognize performances featuring one or more Asian languages, originating from or recognized within Asian markets. The Best Traditional Folk Album category will honor traditional folk recordings, awarding performing artists, producers, engineers or mixers, and new songwriters who comprise over 50 percent of the album's playing time. The Best Latin Song category will award songwriters for new Latin songs with at least 51 percent of lyrics in Spanish. The Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance category will recognize singles and tracks in a style distinct from current pop music forms.
Multiple existing categories will see adjustments. The Best R&B Performance Category has been renamed Best R&B Solo Performance, and the Best Folk Album Category has been renamed Best Contemporary Folk Album. The maximum number of times an artist can be submitted for the Best New Artist category has increased from three to four, though artists with a prior Grammy nomination remain ineligible. The requirement for new recordings eligible for an album to be Grammy-eligible has been lowered from 75 percent to 66 percent.
Songwriters and composers on winning albums in most genre categories will now receive Grammy statuettes and Achievement Certificates. Internet-only releases will become eligible for the Best Album Notes and Best Historical Album categories if supporting materials are included with the commercial download. The Recording Academy also introduced Ballot Plus, an opt-in voting system allowing verified voting members to cast votes in up to 15 peer-related categories. Voting members who do not opt into Ballot Plus, or fail to meet verification requirements, will use the standard 10/3 voting ballot.
Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. said, "2027 is going to be an amazing year for the Grammy Awards, and one that reflects the extraordinary growth we’re seeing across music. The changes advanced by our Recording Academy members speak to the breadth of today’s music industry and the many genres, crafts, and creators shaping it. We’re excited to see these updates come to life in the year ahead as we celebrate the music people who are driving music forward." The Grammy Awards ceremony will be broadcast on ABC, Disney+, and Hulu. The Academy adjusts Grammy rules and categories annually following proposals from its members.
