MIDLAND, TEXAS — A shooting in Midland, Texas, on June 12, 2026, resulted in one death and ten injuries. The suspect, 45-year-old Victor Mata Villarreal, was located deceased inside an abandoned veterinary clinic several hours after the incident began.
Villarreal, who resided in Odessa, Texas, had previously fired at law enforcement officers and bystanders before entering the clinic. Authorities did not publicly disclose the cause of Villarreal's death. Midland Mayor Lori Blong stated that officials used robotic and aerial equipment to confirm the suspect's death.
Officials had issued a warrant for Villarreal on charges of attempted capital murder of a peace officer. On June 10, 2026, Villarreal discharged a firearm multiple times at a Midland police officer, who returned fire during the encounter. Villarreal fled the traffic stop, and his vehicle was later found unoccupied nearby. The police officer involved in the June 10 incident sustained no physical injuries.
Midland Memorial Hospital reported that four patients required surgery following the shooting on June 12. Additionally, five patients received treatment and were released from the hospital. Local business employee Andrea Mendias reported hearing approximately 40 gunshots during the incident. The city of Midland has an approximate population of 140,000 residents and is situated within the Texas oil and gas producing region. Odessa and Midland are located more than 300 miles west of Dallas, Texas.
