YEREVAN — The Strong Armenia party petitioned the Constitutional Court to annul the results of the June 7 election, alleging electoral violations and the suppression of opposition candidates. Several members of the Armenian opposition were arrested on Friday.

The Constitutional Court is scheduled to determine within two days whether it will review the petition. Armenian authorities denied allegations of electoral violations and accused opposition groups of bribing voters.

The Central Election Commission released final results from the June 7 election showing the Civil Contract party received 49.7 percent of the vote, which would allow it to form the next government. The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe reported that the election campaign resulted in criminal cases against opposition candidates.

Strong Armenia leader Samvel Karapetyan is currently under house arrest on charges of advocating the overthrow of the government. Karapetyan rejected the charges against him, stating they were politically motivated. Armenian investigators issued six arrest warrants for other Strong Armenia members the day before the election, accusing them of purchasing votes.

Parliamentary candidates Ruslan Barsegyan and Ashot Egiazaryan were detained for two months pending an investigation. Armenia bloc representative Asatur Kocharyan was placed under house arrest, and former lawmaker Ruben Akopyan was arrested on Friday. Opposition politician David Kazinyan was arrested on Thursday.

Russian authorities imposed import bans on Armenian agricultural products and other goods in the weeks leading up to the election. These trade restrictions were implemented due to violations of agricultural import regulations, Russian authorities stated. "The Russian trade restrictions exerted direct pressure on the Armenian electorate," Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe election monitors said. "Investigative bodies, the prosecutor’s office, and the courts have been turned by this government into instruments for punishing and suppressing the opposition," Strong Armenia said in a statement. "We will not tolerate this and will fight to the end with the full force of the law and with determination."
