WASHINGTON, D.C. — On January 6, 2023, during the 14th ballot for House speaker, Rep. Mike Rogers moved toward Rep. Matt Gaetz on the House floor. Rep. Richard Hudson physically restrained Rogers by grappling with his face and upper body.

The confrontation occurred after more than a dozen failed speaker votes over four days. At approximately 11 p.m. on January 6, Gaetz voted "present" on the 14th speaker ballot. Gaetz led a group of six Republican representatives who attempted to block Kevin McCarthy from the speakership.

Prior to an adjournment vote, Gaetz told Kevin McCarthy, "We're good. We'll do it tonight." McCarthy's staff had previously declined Gaetz's request to pause voting until the following Monday. McCarthy also urged Gaetz to end the voting delay, citing other members missing family and health emergencies.

"I don't think you understand. That does not concern me whatsoever. Personal appeals have no effect on me," Gaetz said. Rogers also addressed Gaetz during the confrontation. "Matt, I won't forget this. You hear me?" he said.

Kevin McCarthy was elected House speaker later that night. Two days after the election, Gaetz informed Rogers that he forgave him. Rogers posted an apology on X, writing, "I briefly lost my temper."

Rep. Clay Higgins wept following the floor altercation. Rep. Morgan Luttrell stared at Gaetz while reciting the Rosary. On the same day, Gaetz requested an appointment as chair of an Armed Services Committee subcommittee. Rogers was designated to chair the full Armed Services Committee.
