LOS ANGELES — Disney released the live-action Moana trailer on Monday. The film is scheduled to be released in theaters on July 10.

Catherine Lagaʻaia takes over the title role of Moana in the upcoming live-action film. Dwayne Johnson reprises the role of Maui after voicing the character in the 2016 animated movie and its 2024 sequel.

The cast of the live-action film includes John Tui as Chief Tui, Frankie Adams as Sina, and Rena Owen as Gramma Tala. Dana Ledoux Miller and Jared Bush wrote the screenplay.

Dwayne Johnson said that transforming into Maui with a wig and bodysuit took about two and a half hours every day. Thomas Kail said, "We knew that it had to be something that could have real lift to it. That one weighs seven pounds more with all the water in it for all those hours a day."

The live-action adaptation features music by Mark Mancina, Lin-Manuel Miranda and Opetaia Foa'i, with Mark Mancina returning to score the film. Lin-Manuel Miranda received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song for "How Far I'll Go" from the 2016 animated version and also serves as a producer on the live-action film.

Producers include Dwayne Johnson, Beau Flynn for FlynnPictureCo, Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia via their Seven Bucks Productions banner, and Lin-Manuel Miranda. Auliʻi Cravalho, who voiced Moana in both the 2016 original and its 2024 sequel, serves as an executive producer alongside Thomas Kail, Scott Sheldon and Charles Newirth.

Matt Nando Kelly wrote on Twitter: "they took all the magic from the animated version and transformed it into snl lighting."

The 2016 animated film Moana grossed $643 million at the global box office and was nominated for Best Animated Feature at the Academy Awards.
