LOS ANGELES — Lil Nas X posted a video to Instagram on Wednesday addressing his recent mental health treatment, a bipolar disorder diagnosis, and his recovery. The artist, born Montero Lamar Hill, stated he spent several months in a rehabilitation facility after an arrest and hospitalization in August 2023.
Lil Nas X was arrested in Los Angeles in August and was briefly taken to a hospital for a suspected overdose. Los Angeles police reported finding him walking nude on Ventura Boulevard in the San Fernando Valley, wearing only white briefs and white boots. Authorities alleged he charged at responding police officers, and a criminal complaint stated three officers were injured during the encounter.
He spent three days in jail before being released on $75,000 bail, which was conditional on attending drug treatment. Lil Nas X pleaded not guilty to three counts of battery with injury on a police officer and one count of resisting an executive officer. In April, Judge Alan Schneider authorized him to enter a mental health diversion program. The court determined the police encounter resulted from his subsequently diagnosed bipolar disorder.
The mental health diversion program requires Lil Nas X to comply with a treatment plan and obey all laws for two years for the four felony counts to be dismissed. Lil Nas X confirmed his diagnosis in the video, stating, "When I got my bipolar disorder diagnosis, I feel like I had known for the past few years, but I didn't want to admit to it 'cause I didn't want to have to take medication and, I don't know, have people think different of me." He added, "I mean, I'm already Black and gay, like, damn, God. Gay, bipolar, like I'm living life on extreme hard mode."
Lil Nas X stated, "These last four days have been terrifying." He also said, "I'm doing much better. I'm feeling better. I'm creating freely, and there's less fear in my heart." He stated, "I have a therapist now and a psychiatrist, which has been really helpful." Following rehabilitation, Lil Nas X returned to reside in Atlanta and Los Angeles.
Lil Nas X said, "I've been doing music for seven years now." He stated, "I wanted to let you guys know there is new music on the way." He concluded, "I love you and all I want to do is continue to try to make you proud and make myself proud."
