NAYPYIDAW — The Myanmar military transferred Aung San Suu Kyi to a designated residence in late April. No independent organization has verified her current health status or exact location, and family members do not currently have contact with her.
Military authorities occasionally reference Suu Kyi's name to mitigate international pressure. The U.S. government has publicly demanded her immediate release and access to healthcare, while the U.K. government has requested authorization for her relatives to communicate with her. The E.U. categorizes her as a prisoner detained without legal justification. The Philippine government has requested the release of Suu Kyi and other political detainees, and authorities requested that an ASEAN diplomatic representative be granted permission to visit her. Thai representatives inquired regarding her welfare with Min Aung Hlaing in April. Chinese representatives referred to Suu Kyi as an "old friend" during late April and stated they continue to track her circumstances.
Min Aung Hlaing maintained a hostile stance toward Suu Kyi prior to the 2021 coup. She dismissed his allegations of voting irregularities in late 2020. Her appointment to leadership prevented him from becoming president. Former United Nations envoy Razali Ismail said she frightened the military, using profanity to emphasize the intensity.
Previous encounters between Suu Kyi and military personnel include an incident in April 1989 in Danubyu, where personnel directed firearms at her political procession. A commanding captain reported receiving written authorization to engage the procession with lethal force, but a senior military officer halted the ordered engagement. Regime-aligned individuals assaulted her vehicle in Yangon during November 1996 with chains and blunt weapons, and security personnel did not intervene. Government-backed assailants attacked her convoy near Depayin in the Sagaing Region on May 30, 2003, resulting in the deaths of numerous supporters. Former military leader Than Shwe left a meeting in 2007 after a foreign diplomat mentioned Suu Kyi's name.
International diplomatic activity has occurred in the region. The Malaysian foreign minister traveled to Naypyidaw in May, and the Indonesian foreign minister arrived in Naypyidaw on June 8. The Laotian foreign minister schedules a visit between June 12 and June 13. Indian authorities hosted Min Aung Hlaing using diplomatic protocols designated for visiting heads of state. Bilateral discussions covered border security, armed insurgencies, mineral resources, and commercial transit routes. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with him prior to the late April remarks.
