MINNEAPOLIS — An immigration judge in Minneapolis denied asylum to Adrian Conejo Arias and his family and ordered them deported to Ecuador. The family includes Conejo Arias's son, 5-year-old Liam Ramos.
Lawyers paid by advocacy groups for the family plan to file a final appeal of the asylum denial. Lawyers for the family say Liam Ramos is experiencing mental anguish as a result of the asylum proceedings.
Under U.S. immigration law, asylum is granted only to applicants who demonstrate they are targeted for violence in their home country or are part of a targeted group. Only 12% of asylum cases filed by migrants from Ecuador succeed. Liam Ramos was photographed wearing a blue bunny hat and a Spider-Man backpack.
