WEST BLOOMFIELD, MICHIGAN — Ayman Ghazali rammed an explosive-filled vehicle into Temple Israel in West Bloomfield, Michigan, sparking a gunfight with armed security officers before fatally shooting himself in the head. The attack left a hallway leading to the early childhood center destroyed, with walls lined with class photos and floors charred, according to photos released by Temple Israel.

There were 140 staffers and children inside Temple Israel during the attack, and none were injured. The synagogue's director of security was injured in the attack and is recovering, Temple Israel officials said.

During the attack, the car's engine erupted into flames, authorities said. A gunfight broke out between Ghazali and armed security officers inside a hallway at Temple Israel.

"Temple Israel was targeted. Our people were ready," the synagogue said on its website. "They protected our children with courage, training, and extraordinary strength."

Ghazali is linked to Hezbollah. He entered the United States from Lebanon in 2011 and became a U.S. citizen in 2016. Family members of Ghazali in Lebanon were killed in an airstrike days before the attack.

The Israel Defense Forces said at least one of Ghazali's brothers was a member of Hezbollah.

Temple Israel posted on Facebook that it initially resisted sharing photos of the devastation from the attack but later shared them after online videos and photos caused harm to survivors. Photos show unattended snacks on small tables in the hallway at Temple Israel's early childhood center.

Temple Israel is raising money to repair damage caused by the attack and assist victims.
