SAN ANTONIO — The Texas Education Agency (TEA) confirmed it is reviewing the educator certificate of San Antonio Independent School District (ISD) Superintendent Jaime Aquino. Aquino is accused of failing to report educator misconduct.

The TEA Educator Investigations Division opened the case around June 7 and notified Aquino on that date. SAISD Chief Communications Officer Laura Short stated the district learned of the certificate review after a reporter inquiry.

SAISD provided supporting documentation to the TEA after the investigation began. Short indicated the district believes the inquiry may relate to a child protective services notification. Short said, "We can speculate that someone questioned whether CPS (Child Protective Services) was notified of an incident involving a student at one of our campuses."

Short said, "We provided the documentation to confirm that CPS was contacted by the campus. If this satisfies the TEA review, and TEA determines the review was unfounded, the flag will be removed. Flags are removed when determined to be unfounded; they only remain on record if cause was found."

TEA Director of Media Relations Jake Kobersky stated the investigation is in its early stages and SAISD is cooperating. Short stated SAISD expects a resolution to the review during the week of June 16, 2026.

Aquino assumed the position of SAISD superintendent in May 2022. He previously announced he will retire from the district in January 2027.
