MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE — Karen Vogelsang was appointed to the Memphis-Shelby County Schools oversight board on June 16, filling the final seat on the nine-member body. House Speaker Cameron Sexton selected Vogelsang for the position, ahead of the board's first scheduled meeting on Thursday.

The oversight board will assume decision-making authority from the locally elected school board concerning the superintendent's contract, budget, and curriculum. The board is expected to oversee Memphis-Shelby County schools for four years, with initial duties including assessing staff, students, and facilities to develop a transformation plan.

Vogelsang previously worked as a mortgage banker before teaching in Memphis-Shelby County elementary schools for 15 years, ending her teaching tenure in 2018. During her teaching career, she taught at Keystone Elementary School in 2014 and received the Tennessee Teacher of the Year award that same year. Former educator Vogelsang said, "The first time I had the opportunity to teach it was electrifying; I knew then I had made the right decision to become a teacher."

Vogelsang is currently a self-employed early childhood literacy consultant. In 2024, she served as director of the ARISE2Read tutoring nonprofit. She is the third appointee to the board with direct classroom or administrative experience in the schools.
