SAN FRANCISCO — A judge sentenced Mary Fong Lau to two years' probation with a three-year suspended driving license after she entered a no-contest plea to four counts of vehicular manslaughter. The charges stemmed from a March 2024 crash in which Lau slammed her Mercedes into a San Francisco bus stop, killing Diego Cardoso de Oliveira, his wife Matilde Ramos, and their two infant children, and injuring others.

Judge Bruce Chan cited Lau's advanced age, lack of criminal record, and expressions of remorse when issuing the sentencing. Each vehicular manslaughter count in this case carries a maximum sentence of 15 years to life in prison.

The crash occurred at a bus stop in the West Portal neighborhood of San Francisco. Diego Cardoso de Oliveira, his wife Matilde Ramos, their one-year-old child Joaquim, and their two-month-old child Cauê were killed in the crash.

Prosecutors said Lau was driving at more than 70 mph in the residential neighborhood at the time of the crash. The family was waiting at a bus stop to travel to the San Francisco Zoo when the crash occurred.

"I want to say to all the family, sorry. Sorry," Lau said in court.

Diego Cardoso de Oliveira was an executive at Apple. Lau had been charged with four counts of vehicular manslaughter before entering her plea.
