LOS ANGELES — Paul McCartney released an audio installment titled "The Man on the Run" on March 19, 2026, as part of the Audible series Words + Music. The project features extended interviews between McCartney and Oscar-winning filmmaker Morgan Neville, along with new musical performances by McCartney.

The installment explores McCartney's memories of repairing his friendship with John Lennon in the years before Lennon's 1980 murder. McCartney said that he and Lennon began talking to each other instead of shouting over the phone, often discussing domestic life and raising young children.

"I would go and visit him and we had quite a bit of interaction, and the same with George and Ringo," McCartney said. John Lennon had just become a father again with the birth of his son Sean when he and McCartney were rebuilding their friendship.

McCartney said that he had started baking bread and had become proficient at it. "Oh, yeah, I'm making bread!" Lennon had responded, according to McCartney.

"Somehow that was peaceful. And we weren't fighting anymore," McCartney said.

McCartney said that repairing his relationship with Lennon was his only consolation after Lennon was murdered in 1980. "I don't know what I would have thought if we hadn't and we were still warring," he said.

McCartney also reflected on the lasting impact of Lennon's death. "The guy who did it is still in New York and he's in jail and he's still knocking around — you can't make sense of it. The world is a very sort of bizarre place, as we all know," McCartney said.

The project combines interviews conducted over three years in Los Angeles, New York, and London. McCartney said he did not realize his conversation with Neville was taking place on the anniversary of Lennon's death.
