JERUSALEM — Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi arrived in Israel on Sunday for a visit that will culminate in the opening of its embassy in Jerusalem on Monday. The embassy opening marks the formal establishment of diplomatic relations after Israel recognized Somaliland's independence in December 2025.
Abdullahi and First Lady Fardowsa Mohamed Roble received an official welcome ceremony from President Isaac Herzog and First Lady Michal Herzog at the President's Residence in Jerusalem at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday. This visit marks the first time a Somaliland head of state has traveled to Israel, which was also the first country to grant formal diplomatic recognition to Somaliland. Abdullahi had previously visited Israel during diplomatic contacts preceding the December 2025 recognition.
On Sunday, Abdullahi held diplomatic meetings with President Herzog and attended a state luncheon with Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar. He also laid a wreath at Mount Herzl, visited the Yad Vashem memorial, and planted a tree with the Keren Kayemeth LeIsrael-Jewish National Fund at the Grove of Nations. A dinner event featuring representatives of Israel's business community was held on Sunday evening.
On Monday, Abdullahi held talks with Foreign Minister Sa'ar and met with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The president's schedule in Israel is set to continue through Thursday, including meetings with government ministers and business leaders. Delegation discussions have included cooperation in areas such as security, trade, water management, and renewable energy. Abdullahi is also scheduled to visit the Knesset and the Nova music festival memorial site.
Local authorities detained dozens of individuals for protesting against diplomatic ties with Israel. Among those detained were religious leaders and individuals carrying Palestinian flags.
