BERMUDA — Dwayne Robinson, the One Bermuda Alliance's Shadow Minister of Home & Community Affairs, called for a public referendum on full CARICOM membership. Robinson's statement came ahead of a government decision on the matter, following an online petition from members of the public requesting such a vote.

Robinson stated that Bermudians should have a say on any final decision by the Progressive Labour Party Government regarding full CARICOM membership. He emphasized that this stance was not a rejection of the Caribbean region, noting cultural, sporting, historical, and community ties shared by many Bermudian families across the region.

Robinson also addressed Bermuda's status as an overseas territory of the United Kingdom, pointing out that the UK holds constitutional authority over Bermuda's foreign affairs, defense, and internal security. He said Bermuda would encounter numerous restrictions as a full CARICOM member due to this territorial status. The Shadow Minister indicated the One Bermuda Alliance believes Bermuda’s current Associate Membership in CARICOM is the most suitable arrangement.

The Bermuda government previously published a Green Paper detailing proposed CARICOM membership and its associated costs. Robinson said that full CARICOM membership was not included as a policy point in the Progressive Labour Party’s last platform. He added that the issue also failed to secure the popular vote in the previous election. Robinson affirmed that the OBA would not support a move from Associate Membership to full CARICOM membership until the public receives clear answers and the opportunity to decide directly.

No independent assessment of Dwayne Robinson’s claims was available.
