BETHESDA, MARYLAND — Donald Trump underwent an annual medical examination at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center on May 26. Physician to the President Sean Barbabella released a medical memorandum regarding the examination.
During the examination, Donald Trump was evaluated by 22 medical specialists. This number represents the highest number recorded for a single presidential medical examination, surpassing his previous examination which involved 14 physicians. Many specialist evaluations occurred in the days or weeks preceding the May 26 examination. Physicians from Harvard University and Duke University assisted with the evaluation.
The medical memorandum noted Donald Trump's weight at 238 pounds, a 14-pound increase since his last examination. Dr. Barbabella also noted lower leg swelling and attributed bruises on Donald Trump's hands to irritation from frequent handshaking while he was taking aspirin for cardiovascular prevention.
Regarding the comprehensive assessment, Barbabella stated, "President Trump remains in excellent health, demonstrating strong cardiac, pulmonary, neurological, and overall physical function. He is fully fit to carry out all duties of the Commander-in-Chief and Head of State."
Cardiologist Jonathan Reiner commented on the number of specialists. He said, "It’s a very large number of docs, and I was struggling to outline a potential list of consultants that you would bring in that would fill up 22 slots." Reiner previously served as the cardiologist for former Vice President Dick Cheney.
Rosanne Leipzig, a professor emerita of geriatrics and palliative medicine, commented on the mental status examination component. Leipzig said, "The stuff that I most worry about here is the mental status exam." Trump stated that he took the Montreal Cognitive Assessment three times and received a perfect score each time.
