NEW YORK — An egg was thrown toward professional basketball player Victor Wembanyama outside his New York hotel following Game 4. Video footage shows the projectile hitting a street sign. Wembanyama briefly confronted an individual near the entrance before entering the building.
The New York Police Department stated the agency had no records concerning the egg incident. Separately, 56 individuals were taken into custody by the department following the game on charges including assault and disorderly conduct.
The incident occurred after the New York Knicks defeated the San Antonio Spurs 107-106 in Game 4. The Knicks overcame a 29-point deficit to secure the victory, taking a 3-1 series lead. During the game, Wembanyama missed 10 of his final 12 shot attempts and three of his final four free throws.
Wembanyama also received a flagrant foul in the third quarter for making contact with Karl-Anthony Towns. He has accumulated three flagrant foul points during the postseason. League rules mandate a one-game suspension when a player accumulates four flagrant foul points. The NBA reviewed a play from Game 3 in which Wembanyama made contact with Jalen Brunson but did not upgrade the non-call to a flagrant foul.
Wembanyama stated, "Of course, I’m going to be more careful. But it’s not going to change much." Head coach Mike Brown commented on the officiating, saying, "Obviously, they didn’t see it. At the end of the day, hopefully, like I said before, the officials will be consistent with what they see on both ends of the floor."
Television host Mike Greenberg addressed the situation on air. Greenberg said, "If you’re throwing eggs at Victor Wembanyama, and the other night, if you’re beating up people, threatening or doing anything to people who are wearing Spurs jerseys, just know that you are a disgrace." Game 5 of the championship series is scheduled for Saturday in San Antonio.
