MONACO — The FIA reinstated Pierre Gasly to third place in the 2026 Monaco Grand Prix classification after overturning two pit lane time penalties. Alpine filed a Right of Review appeal against two five-second time penalties issued to Gasly during the race, which had originally dropped him from third to seventh place in the results.
Race officials initially penalized Gasly for exceeding the 60 km/h pit lane speed limit during two separate pit stops. Formula One Management confirmed an error in the distance measurement used for the pit lane entry timing loop. The pit lane entry timing loop was 77 centimeters shorter than the official distance used to calculate vehicle speeds, which caused average pit lane speeds to be overreported.
FIA stewards determined that corrected data showed Gasly did not exceed the 60 km/h speed limit. The FIA announced the classification change on Friday ahead of practice for the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix. The reinstatement provides Alpine with its first podium finish since 2024.
Red Bull driver Isack Hadjar moved from third to fourth place in the revised classification. McLaren driver Oscar Piastri moved from fourth to fifth place, and Racing Bulls drivers Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad each dropped one position in the standings.
Six drivers received pit lane speeding penalties during the Monaco Grand Prix. Lewis Hamilton, George Russell, Oscar Piastri, and Franco Colapinto received identical penalties for the same offense. Hamilton served his penalty under safety car conditions and retained his second-place track position. Russell received a drive-through penalty that resulted in a thirteenth-place finish. Piastri served his penalty during the race and lost three track positions. The teams representing Hamilton, Russell, Piastri, and Colapinto did not request a Right of Review. FIA stewards stated that regulations do not permit them to reverse penalties that have already been served during a race.
Pierre Gasly said, "I don't think there is anything that could hurt me more right now. It's ten years I'm f*****g working my ass off for this type of moment. We did everything right today [to be] standing on that podium in front of all the fans that turned up."
Isack Hadjar said, "That would be a shame for my history in Monaco because it would just look good that I signed my contract for Red Bull in Monaco after winning a race and having my first podium for Red Bull in Monaco. It just sounds good. The only downside would be the three points taken away from me."
