SAN FRANCISCO — OpenAI Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman publicly shared a photograph of his husband and son in April 2026, following a Molotov cocktail attack on his San Francisco residence. He published the image on his personal blog and cited fatherhood as a central experience in his life.

Altman, 41, and his husband, Australian software engineer Oliver Mulherin, welcomed a son in February 2025. Altman said, "It has been my favorite thing ever in life by far."

A 20-year-old man allegedly threw a Molotov cocktail at Altman's Russian Hill home and also threatened to burn down an OpenAI office. Altman wrote on his personal blog, "Normally we try to be pretty private, but in this case I am sharing a photo in the hopes that it might dissuade the next person from throwing a Molotov cocktail at our house, no matter what they think about me."

Altman previously detailed a daily routine focused on sleep, exercise, and nutrition in a 2018 blog post, which included lifting weights and meditating three times per week. OpenAI is preparing for a potential initial public offering.

Altman has made changes to his personal practices, including ceasing to write letters to his son about professional challenges. This decision stemmed from concerns that such communications could be discovered in legal proceedings, such as the lawsuit filed by Elon Musk against OpenAI. He has also observed that people sometimes approach him to pitch startup ideas when he visits public parks with his son.
