LA MIRADA, CALIFORNIA — Jonathan Michael Alvarado, a 39-year-old man, was arrested by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department on charges of rape and elder abuse for allegedly sexually assaulting a 61-year-old Alzheimer's patient at The Palms La Mirada Senior Living Facility in La Mirada, California.

Alvarado faces one felony count of rape and one felony count of elder abuse, according to authorities and the victim's family. Surveillance cameras captured a man inside the bedroom of the 61-year-old patient, who had been diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's disease at age 55, according to the victim's family.

Alvarado first came into contact with the victim while working as a volunteer musician contracted to perform for the facility's residents, according to investigators. The crime was discovered by the victim's daughter, Camyl Anderson, who monitors her mother's well-being through cameras she installed in the apartment.

Anderson checked the camera footage in June of last year and saw a man sitting on her mother's bed, bending over, tying his shoes, and then leaving her nude on the bed, according to Anderson. "The day it happened, I was at work. I received more notifications than I usually do," Anderson said.

Anderson immediately called caregivers to check on her mother and then contacted police, according to Anderson. The victim's family has filed a lawsuit against The Palms La Mirada Senior Living Facility.

Dominique Westmoreland, the family's attorney, said there is a lack of security at The Palms La Mirada Senior Living Facility, according to Westmoreland. "The safety and well-being of our residents is our top priority. We are disturbed by these allegations and will fully cooperate with any criminal investigation," The Palms La Mirada Senior Living Facility said in a statement.

The investigation is ongoing, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. The department is urging anyone with information related to the case or who believes they may have been victimized by Alvarado to contact the Special Victims Bureau and ask for Sergeant Joe Ramos at (562) 946-7960.
