WALLER COUNTY, TEXAS — Waller County grew by 5.7% last year, adding nearly 3,800 new residents, according to the latest Census estimates. The increase makes Waller County the fastest-growing county in Texas and the second-fastest-growing in the United States.

The rapid growth is being fueled by housing developments and expanding business investment along the Interstate 10 and Highway 290 corridors. Major companies are choosing Waller County for new projects and operations, accelerating the pace of development beyond earlier projections. County officials originally expected the population to double by 2040, but they are already approaching those numbers in 2026.

Waller County Judge Trey Duhon, who has served since 2015, said the unexpected scale of growth presents challenges. "That shows you the level of growth has been far in excess of what we anticipated," Duhon said. "It’s exponential."

In response, county officials have hired outside consultants to help review the high volume of new neighborhood development proposals. Waller County is also focused on hiring more sheriff’s deputies, expanding roads, and investing in infrastructure to prepare for future growth.

Jason Allen, who moved his family from Sugar Land to Waller County last year seeking a quieter lifestyle and more space, said he appreciates the area’s character but notices the changes. "I really like the small-town feel," Allen said. "Crazy and you can see it. You can see the growth." He added, "Is there a thing as too much growth quickly? Oh, it can be if it’s not planned right."
