CHICAGO — Sheaves Slate, 27, who is facing murder and arson charges in connection with the death of Chicago Fire Department firefighter Michael Altman, will not appear in court on Saturday as scheduled because he is hospitalized. He could appear before a judge on Monday instead.

The charges against Slate stem from a fire that broke out in the 1700-block of West North Shore Avenue in the Rogers Park neighborhood on Monday morning. Chicago Fire Department firefighter Michael Altman fell from the first floor into the basement after the first floor collapsed around 11:30 a.m. on Monday. Altman, 32, died from his injuries on Tuesday.

Slate was arrested in the 800-block of West Irving Park Road on Wednesday. According to Chicago police, he was picked up on Wednesday on an active warrant for failure to appear in court on an unrelated case. He has a history of drug and retail theft charges.

Altman was a fourth-generation Chicago Fire Department firefighter who was a husband and a father to a young child. His wife is pregnant with their second child.

Members of the public lined the streets to pay their respects as Altman's body was taken from the medical examiner's office to an Oak Lawn funeral home on Friday. At the United Center on Friday, the Chicago Blackhawks and fans took a moment of silence to honor Altman.

The visitation is scheduled for Thursday from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Saint Rita of Cascia. Altman's funeral is set for Friday at Saint Rita of Cascia at 10 a.m. Altman's funeral will be covered live on television and online on Friday morning.

Reilly's Daughter, a bar in Oak Lawn, is selling $25 t-shirts with all of the proceeds going to the Altman family.
