ROCKFORD — East Kentwood won the MHSAA Division 1 state championship track meet on Saturday at Rockford High School with 63 points, defeating Detroit Catholic Central by one point, 63-62.

This is East Kentwood’s first state title since completing a three-peat from 2017 to 2019. The Falcons earned points in the 100, 200, 400, 3200, 110 and 300 meter hurdles, and the short relays. Their two event victories came in the 800 meter relay and the pole vault, where Reece Emeott prevailed.

Detroit Catholic Central finished second with 62 points. Zacchaeus Brocks won the Division 1 titles in the 110 and 300 meter hurdles. Malachi Clayton, a junior, won the Division 1 long jump title. Paxton Heitsch, a senior, won the Division 1 shot put title. The Shamrocks also won the Division 1 400 meter relay.

Other event winners included Rodney Endsley of Walled Lake Western, who won Division 1 titles in the 200 and 400 meter sprint races. Wendell Childs Jr., a junior from Clarkston, repeated as Division 1 champion in the 800 meters. Vernall Lee, a sophomore from Detroit Martin Luther King, won the Division 1 100 meter dash with a time of 10.76 seconds, ahead of Peyton Trammer of Belleville (10.77) and Keiavion Korenstra of Grand Haven (10.79).

Northville junior Brandon Cloud won the Division 1 3200 meter race, finishing 0.28 seconds ahead of Howell junior Jack McGregor. This marked the fifth straight year Northville has won at least one event title at the Division 1 finals. Detroit Renaissance won the Division 1 1600 meter relay with Marcel Lake, Keion Boone, De’Sean Wright, and Joel Hill. Ann Arbor Pioneer won the Division 1 3200 meter relay with Beckett Crooks, Theo Sacks Thomas, Quinn Davis, and Kamari Ronfeldt.
