STAFFORD COUNTY — A motorcoach crashed into multiple vehicles that had slowed down for a work zone on Interstate 95 in Stafford County, Virginia, early Friday. Dmitri Doncev, 45, Ecaterina Doncev, 44, and their two children, Emily and Mark, were killed in the crash.

The Doncev family was traveling from Massachusetts to a family wedding in South Carolina when the crash occurred. The bus involved was operated by E&P Travel Inc., based in Kings Mountain, North Carolina. Virginia State Police identified the bus driver as Jing S. Dong, 48, of Staten Island, New York.

Dmitri and Ecaterina Doncev emigrated to the U.S. from Moldova in 2008 and settled in Greenfield, Massachusetts, where they lived with their children. Dmitri worked as a nurse at Holyoke Medical Center, and Ecaterina was a hair stylist. The couple’s children, Emily and Mark, were students at Providence Christian Academy in Greenfield.

Before the fatal crash, Dmitri and his brother Iuri had been traveling separately to South Carolina and became separated during the trip. Dmitri told his brother, “You go ahead. I’ll catch up later.” Iuri Doncev confirmed the family’s death in a Facebook post Friday night. “With broken hearts, we share the devastating loss of our beloved brother and his family in the tragic accident on South I-95 in Virginia early this morning,” he wrote.

Ecaterina had spent days making homemade desserts for the family wedding. Providence Christian Academy released a statement saying, “Providence Christian Academy is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of the Doncev family, following a motor vehicle accident on interstate 95.” Carolina Bublik, a relative, said, “A son, a father — the whole family — everyone that has been dear to us.”
