CHICAGO — The Detroit Tigers lost to the Chicago White Sox 4-3 in 10 innings on Friday, May 29, 2026. Miguel Vargas hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 10th inning against Drew Anderson to secure the victory for Chicago.

Troy Melton pitched seven innings for the Tigers, and Will Vest held a 2-1 lead through the eighth inning before the game eventually went to extra innings. Dillon Dingler hit a two-run home run in the third inning for Detroit, providing their early offensive spark.

Munetaka Murakami exited the game in the third inning due to a right hamstring strain and will be placed on the 10-day injured list. "It's going to be a couple of weeks," Tigers manager Will Venable said about Murakami's injury. Before leaving, Murakami had recorded 20 home runs, 49 RBIs, 79 strikeouts, 44 walks, and a .947 OPS in 56 games this season.

The loss extended Detroit’s struggles in extra-inning contests; the Tigers are now 0-5 in such games in 2026. They have also lost 19 of their last 23 games and hold a 22-36 record as of May 30. Detroit sits in last place in the American League Central, 11.5 games behind the Cleveland Guardians and 8.5 games behind the White Sox.

"It's a brutal feeling because we were in position to win it a couple of times by one [run]." Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said after the May 29 loss. "It's not numb because it still hurts," he added when asked about repeated walk-off losses. Hinch also noted, "They've played well. You can see some of the new guys providing energy, performance."

Catcher Dillon Dingler acknowledged the difficulty of the loss but emphasized moving forward. "It's difficult, but we can't dwell on it. We can look back and see what we did wrong and correct things we could do better, but we got to look forward to tomorrow," Dingler said.

The Tigers and White Sox are scheduled to play Game 59 of the 2026 MLB season on Saturday, May 30, at 2:10 p.m. ET at Rate Field in Chicago, Illinois.
