ALLEGHE — Jonas Vingegaard won stage 20 of the 2026 Giro d'Italia on Saturday, attacking with 10.6 kilometers remaining on the final climb to Piancavallo and extending his overall lead to more than five minutes. The 200-kilometer mountain stage ran from Gemona del Friuli to Piancavallo and served as the last major test before the race concludes.

Vingegaard, who rides for Team Visma-Lease a Bike, finished alone at the summit, 1 minute and 15 seconds ahead of Felix Gall, who placed second. Giulio Ciccone took third on the stage. After stage 19, Vingegaard had led Gall by 4 minutes and 3 seconds in the general classification; his performance on stage 20 increased that margin to more than five minutes.

The Danish cyclist has previously won the Tour de France twice and claimed victory in the 2025 Vuelta a España. With a win in this year’s Giro d’Italia, he would become the eighth male rider in history to win all three Grand Tours—the Giro, the Tour de France, and the Vuelta a España.

Stage 20 was the final competitive stage of the three-week race. The 2026 Giro d’Italia concludes with a processional ride in Rome, a customary ceremonial finish where the overall standings are rarely altered. Barring unforeseen circumstances, Vingegaard is poised to claim his first Giro d’Italia title.

Vingegaard’s victory on the steep gradients of Piancavallo demonstrated his climbing strength in the third week of a Grand Tour. His two previous Grand Tour wins came under similar late-race conditions, where he built decisive leads on high-altitude finishes.
