CHICAGO — Miguel Vargas hit a two-run home run with two outs in the 10th inning to give the Chicago White Sox a 4-3 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Friday night. The walk-off blast came after the White Sox had tied the game in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Vargas’ home run traveled 391 feet to left field and scored automatic runner Drew Romo, ending the game immediately. It was Vargas’ 13th home run of the season and capped a night in which he drove in all four of Chicago’s runs.

Earlier in the game, Vargas drove in Chicago’s first run with a double in the third inning. The White Sox trailed 2-1 entering the ninth until Rikuu Nishida laid down a bunt that led to the tying run. Andrew Benintendi scored from third base when Detroit first baseman Spencer Torkelson made an errant throw home.

Detroit had taken a 3-2 lead in the top of the 10th on Zack Short’s sacrifice fly to right field, which scored Matt Vierling. The Tigers had previously gone ahead in the third inning on Dillon Dingler’s two-run home run.

Troy Melton pitched seven innings for Detroit, allowing one run on six hits. Bryan Hudson (3-1) pitched the ninth inning for Chicago, allowing a run and striking out one batter. Drew Anderson (2-2) was charged with the loss after allowing the game-ending home run, marking his second blown save of the year.

The victory improved the White Sox to 30-27, a season-best three games over .500. The Tigers fell to 0-5 in extra-inning games this season. Chicago is one of two teams this year with three players who have hit at least 12 home runs.

In the second game of the series, left-hander Anthony Kay (4-1, 3.96 ERA) is scheduled to start for the White Sox. Left-hander Framber Valdez (2-3, 4.28 ERA) is set to pitch for the Tigers.
