LIVERPOOL — Arne Slot was fired as Liverpool manager after two seasons in charge, despite leading the club to the Premier League title in the 2024-25 season and winning the EFL Cup in his first campaign. Liverpool finished fifth in the Premier League during Slot’s second season, prompting a managerial change.

Liverpool’s ownership group, Fenway Sports Group, confirmed Slot’s dismissal and expressed gratitude for his contributions. The decision was made by Michael Edwards, FSG's chief executive, and Richard Hughes, Liverpool's sporting director. Ownership stated that Slot helped guide the club through a difficult period following the death of Diogo Jota in a car crash in July 2024, noting he showed “compassion and humanity.”

Liverpool’s ownership said the decision to change managers was based on a belief that the team needs a more front-foot, aggressive, and urgent style of football. Mohamed Salah said Liverpool must return to being a "heavy metal attacking team that opponents fear" after a defeat to Aston Villa.

Slot replaced Jurgen Klopp in 2024 after Klopp stepped down following nine years in charge. He oversaw a major investment in the squad. Liverpool spent £415 million in the summer 2024 transfer window—the highest outlay in a single window by a British club—and signed Alexander Isak from Newcastle for £125 million, breaking the British transfer record. The club also acquired Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen for £116 million, a club record fee.

The process to appoint Slot’s successor is underway. Andoni Iraola, former AFC Bournemouth manager, is the leading candidate to become Liverpool’s next head coach.
